Mon, July 11, 2016 - Fri, July 15, 2016 Summer Art Camp at the SCGA Morning Classes: 9:00am - 12:00pm: Fun in the Mud (Ages 4-7) In this beginner’s pottery class students will be introduced to different kinds of clay, the pottery wheel, a variety of hand-building skills and colorful glazes. We will draw inspiration for our creations from children’s stories as we combine art, storytelling and play in this unique class offering. Space is the Place (Ages 4-7) “Houston, we have lift off!” Join us for a week of activities designed to engage our youngest students through both visual art and science. We will learn about rockets, the Milky Way, black holes, the solar system, our unique moon and more through painting, sculpture, and mixed media art projects. Modern Masters (Ages 8-12) introduces children to the wonderful world of Van Gogh, Cézanne, Dali, Chagall and Matisse. Using famous works of art to understand the artist’s styles, children reproduce their own artwork. These lessons are classic examples of how mixing art history with simple, foundational techniques can create the most beautiful works of art. Afternoon Classes: 1:00pm - 4:00pm: Artistic Assemblage (Ages 9 & up) Local artist Trisha King will guide this set of projects in which students will use stretched canvases and canvas boards as bases for their assemblages and will refinish a picture frame. Students will incorporate found objects, buttons and costume jewelry and a variety of mixed media to create works that convey meaning and highlight sentimental keepsakes. Print, Stitch & Dye (Ages 9 & up) Students will begin with a simple cross-stitch pattern to get them comfortable using a needle and thread, and will learn simple hand-sewing techniques and how to set up and operate a sewing machine. We will also learn about immersion dyeing techniques, including an ancient and beautiful form from Japan called Shibori. Students will use their new sewing and dyeing skills to create pillows, a cross-shoulder bag, stuffed felt monsters and sew much more! Color Pencil Drawing (Ages 10 & up) In this foundational drawing class, Mr. Hickmon will guide students in the use of Prismacolor pencils to create intensely colorful, life-like drawings through the application of color layering, blending and lifting techniques in addition to basic drawing instruction. This is a class for students who are serious about and dedicated to learning the art of drawing. This is a special way to introduce your child to fine art! We are proud to have served the Sumter community for nearly 5 decades. We offer accomplished teaching artists, small class sizes, projects in a wide variety of media and excellent facilities including three beautiful galleries with art on exhibition year round for students to enjoy and learn from. Cost $115 for prospective members, $105 for members (all supplies included) Space is limited to 12 per class. $25 non-refundable pre-registration fee is due at time of registration. This will be applied to the cost of the class.
