Read-a-Rama has been using children's books as the springboard for programming since 2001 and has thus far offered 8 summers of camp for children in South Carolina and Washington State. Teacher Camp, designed to introduce educators in the 100% engagement model we employ for camp, will train teachers, librarians, youth group leaders and others in full-immersion literacy-rich programming for pre-K-5 students. This training will focus on literary and visual analysis of excellent and diverse children’s books, expanding the experience of books with hands-on, interactive activities, and reflecting on these texts to bring books to life for students with music, movement, community exploration, and STEAM activities. The workshop will emphasize ways to : Engage students creatively across disciplines Cover multi-literacies with Children's and Middle Grade Literature Integrate music, movement, art, and socio-academic skills into any curriculum Cover NCTE, NCTM and Common Core State Standards while offering engaging programming Schedule: 9:00-9:30 Introductions & Group Initiatives 9:30-11:00 Module I, Art Attack: Introduction to our full-immersion literacy approach through a hands-on demo of camp 11:00-11:15 Break 11:15-12:30 Increasing cultural competency through children’s literature & culturally relevant pedagogy 12:30-1:15 Lunch & networking 1:15-2:45 Module 2, Animalia: a second camp module focusing on animal adaptations 2:45-3:00 Break 3:00-4:00 Module planning & sharing Registration closes Monday, Feb. 3, 11:30 pm.
